The first European settlers from the south and the east began ranching and farming this part of the Southern Colorado Rockies in the mid 1800s. Before the town of Creede was established, a hotel opened at Wagon Wheel Gap. Travelers flocked here to get a taste for the great American West. They came to experience the wilderness, to fish in clear water, and to soak in the hot springs.
The original Wagon Wheel Gap historic bath house is on our Creede Colorado Dude Ranch. It was built by General William Palmer in the early 1900s, so his guests could soak their weary or achy bodies. The hot springs at Wagon Wheel Gap have long been believed to have curative powers. Try them for yourself and see.
These days, the spring fed hot tub is adjacent to the pool; soak while you watch your children romp and splash in the pool. Soak after exploring mountain paths on horseback or fly fishing on Goose Creek. Soak in the Wagon Wheel Gap Hot Springs when you feel sore and soak when you feel great – it’s part of the experience here at our Creede Colorado Dude Ranch.

Our world famous local theatre has announced its 2011 Season. As always, The Creede Repertory Theatre has lined up great laughs, fantastic dance moves, and more than one mystery.
The 2011 Season opens with How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, a personal favorite since ambitious window washer Robert Morse used his ‘How to…’ manuel and his quirky charm to impress his boss and get the girl in 1961. This show is sure to delight guests of our Colorado Dude Ranch in early June, 2011.

*(That’s not really true, of course – one kid is just great.)
But we’re not really here to delve into the pros and cons of small and large families.
This Special offer is available the week of June 9 – 16 and August 11-18 2012
Instead, our Colorado Guest Ranch is offering this exciting special for the week of June 9 – 16 and August 11-18 2012. We call it the “Two for One” Special; bring two children ages 9 and under to our Family Dude Ranch that week and you’ll only pay for one.

Go ahead - bring them both.
The truth is, having children is expensive. We want to give them the world, but the world doesn’t come cheap. Sometimes it’s nice to catch a break, and that’s what we’re offering with our Two for One Special. We hope it will make things a little bit easier for you this year.

Holidays are on the horizon, and we look forward to reconnecting with far-flung family and friends. For us, it’s a lot like the opening of the season each year at our Colorado guest ranch.
Many of our guests return year after year. We see each others’ children grow. We share exciting moments: a triumphant first ride; the catch of a big fish. In a sense, we are family.
For us, running our guest ranch Colorado is a labor of love. We wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. We have much to be thankful for when Thanksgiving arrives.

Home.

We were so lucky when we found Wray Warner. He is the head chef over at the 4UR, and makes mealtime a real event at our Colorado Dude Ranch. He came to us from the Four Seasons in Jackson Hole. One thing we love about Wray is that he doesn’t shirk from a challenge. He seems equally as comfortable creating well-presented gourmet meals in our dining room as he does while he grills 30 steaks and just as many hot dogs in the middle of the valley for steak ride. That’s what we were looking for: a chef that was versatile and up to the challenge of making dining a memorable part of our guests’ Rocky Mountain Vacation.
Folks are always impressed with his creative ice creams, made here at the ranch. Some of my favorites include mojito, margarita and cinnamon.

Wary Warner, Exeutive Chef of the 4UR
Delicious soups and meat entrees are offered daily. Tempting menu items include fresh salads, herb crusted halibut, wild mushroom pastas and butternut squash ravioli.
Wray also has a name that matches our ranch’s name, 4UR. The name comes from the little valley where Goose Creek meets the Rio Grande. It is called Wagon Wheel Gap. If you look at the first two letters, the W’s on Wagon and Wheel, you can see they made 4 U’s. Hence “4UR Ranch”. Well, it just happens that Wray Warner also has “4 U’s” in his name! We knew he must be a perfect fit, and he is! His meals never fail to fortify our guests for a full day on their Horseback Riding Vacations.

When summer finally arrives after the long winter here in Creede Colorado, we start gearing up for these few perfect months. We hire about 35 young folks to come and work the ranch for the summer. As far as I can tell, they all love it here almost as much as our guests! Some of our staffers have been coming to 4UR for the summer for 5 or 6 years straight.

Mesa Plateau at 4UR Ranch
They help us with all different aspects of the ranch, from basic maintenance to our fabulous dude ranch kids program. We treat them like members of the 4UR ranch family, the same way we do to everyone who comes down our driveway onto this magical place we call home.
One favorite past time for both staff and guests alike are visits into Creede. The little mining village is a short drive from our family dude ranch. This can be a fun change of pace from life at the 4UR for an afternoon. Bring the kids and head to the underground mining museum. Or maybe have a ladies outing; there are a surprising number of quality boutiques and artisan shops in Creede where a piece of jewelery or handcrafted artwork is bound to catch your eye.
Our staff is knowledgeable about the surrounding area’s attractions and must-see locations. So if you can manage to pull yourself away from the ranch for a day, there are really breath-taking locations all around our area of Southern Colorado. We want to make sure your family ranch vacation is a full as you want it to be: schedule an event for every day, or stay by the pool as others in you clan rush to Goose Creek for fly fishing or off to the stables for a ride. It is up to you: let 4UR ranch be exactly as much as you need.

family fun
The past weeks have been devoted to preparation: mending fences and giving our guest ranch its annual spring face-lift. We came out of winter hibernation and invited members of our greater community to come to the ranch and celebrate a new season. Now we have opened our doors to our guests.
We are really excited to welcome people to the ranch this year, especially families. We love living on the ranch and raising our kids here, even part of the time. They thrive on the fresh air and sunshine, and they are challenged by their experiences: the first horseback ride, lead by an adult; the first solo ride; their first time out on the trail; their first fish. They will remember their time on this Colorado Guest Ranch, and so will your kids. Days are full, and evenings afford relaxing and fun times to gather around a fire pit, roast marshmallows and swap tales.
We look forward to seeing you out at our family dude ranch this summer.

Summer has not yet arrived at this Colorado Dude Ranch, though we get hints of it from time to time. Our valley is a beautiful lush green from all the rain we have had, and the dandelions are in full bloom. Last week, windy gusts and cloudy skies greeted the arrival of our final staff, while our current staff spent a blustery week painting, staining, mowing, cleaning, cooking and cleaning up the herd of horses.
As we prepared for opening, we also were busy in the community. We hosted a skeet shoot to raise money for the Creede Chamber of Commerce. This was good fun for all who participated. In addition, we were happy to lead participants of a mining history convention on a field trip to the mine on our family dude ranch. The town of Creede is one of the last great mining boom-towns in Colorado. A high-grade silver vein was discovered on Willow Creek in 1890, drawing ten thousand miners and prospectors to the area. People still come, both with pick in hand and to learn about that fascinating portion of American history.

Creede Repertory Theater
In another area, Head Chef Wray Warner and kitchen staff donated their time and energy to preparing and serving dinner at the 2009 season opening night of the Creede Repertory Theatre. “A Wonderful Noise” is their first production, which a few of us saw and thoroughly enjoyed. We feel so fortunate to have a nationally recognized theater in our small town that we are happy to support them in any way we can. The fact that they are here means we can live on a Colorado guest ranch in a stunning, remote part of the state and still enjoy top-notch theater.
We will be hosting a benefit dinner for our local Childcare Center this week, and will open up for our 2009 summer on Saturday. We are busy, but we like it that way. Winters can be quiet here, and we always look forward to the bustle of summer.

4UR is perfect for a family ranch vacation
4UR Ranch is a Colorado Dude ranch that is perfect for the whole family. Our ranch managers Aaron and Robin Christensen are raising their four children on the ranch, infusing it with the energy and laughter of youth. Our staff is always delighted to have more children arrive, and are eager to help those children realize their dreams of riding their first horse or catching their first fish.
Our guest ranch also recognizes that sometimes kids and parents need to split up and engage in activities suitable for their own level of experience and energy. Our family dude ranch kids program guarantees that your children are safely engaged in a variety of fun activities from our junior wrangler program to group games; we love to help kids get dusty while their parents are off riding or fishing. In our mind, a dirty kid is a happy kid.
Of course, the best part of a family vacation is having the time to be with your family and do something fun. 4UR is all about creating opportunities appropriate for the whole family during your family ranch vacation; we can recommend trails to hike or provide guided rides, suggest spots for fossil hunting, and of course the pool is always ready for you. Most important, you will have time to be together in what we consider to be the most beautiful setting in the Colorado Rockies.
