The Shooting Experience
4UR Ranch shooting sports are a great addition to your active vacation. From Sporting Clays to Trap Shooting, these activities suit expert and novice alike — there’s nothing like watching your daughter or son safely experience the sport for the first time under our skilled staff’s guidance, or gathering family and friends for a friendly competition to see who ends the day with the strongest scorecard.
Sporting Clays: Just above trout-filled Walton Pond, surrounded by the breathtaking Palisades, our 11-station course is truly world-class. Designed to emulate a real-world wing hunter’s paradise, stations range from a classic going-away double to a quick flying nested pair paired with a running rabbit triple. Each round totals 25 shots per person, with stations varying from regular clays to “90s” and “rabbits” for a variety of challenges.
Trap: Set on a bench above the slender Goose Creek valley, our trap range is one of exceptional beauty. From slow-paced single shots for novices to intense games of “Annie Oakley” for experienced shooters, its adaptability is second to none. Five different shooting pads vary the trajectory and challenge of the clay targets, and our trap thrower adds a horizontal and vertical “wobble” function that randomly changes the throw angle on two planes.
Equipment: We provide a selection of shotguns, along with protective eyewear, ear plugs, and shell belts.
Archery at the 4UR
The 4UR Ranch archery program offers two courses, each as challenging or forgiving as needed to suit archers of all skill levels. The range, set in a wide-open field, offers shots from 10 to 70 yards — ideal for beginners learning proper form and advanced archers testing their limits.
The second is a 3-D walking course winding through varying terrain, with life-size big and small game targets simulating a real hunting experience. Each target offers a 10-yard shot for beginners or kids and a longer, varying-distance shot for advanced archers. Animal size, shot elevation, and shooting windows all vary, making strategy and concentration key — a great way to sharpen any archer’s skills.
The ranch provides adjustable compound bows to fit kids through adults, along with traditional long and recurve bows; experienced shooters are welcome to bring their own equipment. We also carry armguards, shooting gloves, and quivers.
In our introductory year, we found a day or two at the range followed by a round on the walking course makes for a rewarding progression. Many of our archers are beginners or haven’t picked up a bow since summer camp, so don’t be intimidated — our NASP and USA Archery-certified instructors bring countless hours of classroom and field experience, and are always happy to help archers of any level enjoy the sport.
Golfing at the Rio Grande Club
5 Weight or 5 Wood? The choice is yours! Looking for a break from fly fishing, horseback riding, and hiking? The Rio Grande Club is the place to get in a round mid-vacation.
By special arrangement, 4UR Ranch guests have golf privileges at the nearby Rio Grande Club, a spectacular 18-hole championship course just a twenty-minute drive away in South Fork, CO. Ranked “6th Best New Golf Course to Open in 2003” by Golf Digest, the club is one of the finest championship courses in the Southwest. Its 25,000-square-foot clubhouse, designed by John Eden of Eden Architects, features a dining room with mountain vista views, a cozy lounge, conference and banquet rooms, a business center, a pro shop, and a spa with men’s and women’s locker rooms.
The Details: The course winds along the Rio Grande River through large cottonwood groves, with elevations from 8,130 to 8,590 feet and fairways totaling 7,200 yards — the longest par five stretching 600 yards. Six holes play along the river, with water coming into play both laterally and crossing; six meadow holes transition between river and mountain terrain; and the mountain holes, carved into rock and trees, offer dramatic views, capped by a finishing hole with a several-hundred-foot elevation drop.
