What to expect during your Colorado Vacation:
Whether this is your first 4UR vacation, or you’re a returning guest, we want to suggest a few things to bring along that will make the most out of your time with us.
The 4UR Ranch is located in the San Juan Mountains at an elevation of 8500 feet above sea level so you’ll want to be prepared for the possibility of changing temperatures and bright sunshine. It’s always a good idea to be prepared to dress in layers, so bring along a light fleece, light jacket, comfortable tops and pants, and a cap or hat with a brim. You also may want to consider a shirt or two with UV protection woven into the fabric; a relatively new option perfect for high altitude sunshine.
And because there are so many opportunities for you to enjoy outdoor activities during your stay we recommend you also bring along a refillable water bottle, sunscreen, mosquito repellant, sunglasses, and a light rain jacket for afternoon showers.
The Ranch Store:
With brands such as Patagonia, Sage, and Fish Pond the ranch store has a good selection of fishing gear, fishing accessories, UV clothing, T-shirts, sweatshirts, fleece, caps, clothing, and water bottles. We also keep items, such as toothbrushes, sunscreen, mosquito repellent, and toiletries at the front desk….just in case.
For the Anglers:
We’ve long been known for our reputation as an exceptional fly fishing destination so if you plan to spend your days out on the stream you’ll want to bring your rod, vest, waders, hat, sunscreen, bug repellant, refillable water bottle, and a net large enough to hold a sizable trout. If you’re new to the sport, no need to worry, we’ll get you off to a good start by loaning you a pair of waders and one of our Sage rods for the day.
We also have a small but well stocked store on the ranch with a good assortment of items from fishing shirts, to vests, nets, and sunglasses. A complete selection of flies, both dry and wet, are available in the lodge and have been chosen to match the hatches along Goose Creek and the Rio Grande.
If it turns out that you’re in need of a fishing item not found in our store we can direct you to our friends at Rio Grande Anglers or The Ramble House in nearby Creede. Both stores are fully stocked with just about anything an angler could need on the Rio Grande or the nearby tributary waters.
Colorado fishing licenses are required and available through the ranch office.
For the Horseback Riders:
Horseback riding through the Rocky Mountain National Forest is a great way to experience the beautiful vistas, mountain trails, and forests of the 4UR Ranch. If you plan to take advantage of riding during your stay we suggest you bring along your jeans, a comfortable pair of riding boots*, gloves, jacket, brimmed hat with a keeper attached, your camera, refillable water bottle, sunglasses, sunscreen, and bug repellant.
*At the barn we have a small selection of cowboy boots and hats to loan. For safety we don’t allow guests to ride in Athletic shoes, sandals, flat soles, or other types of shoes which may cause the foot to slip through the stirrup. Riding gloves and cap keepers may be purchased at the ranch store.
For the Hikers:
Hiking at the 4UR Ranch is full of endless possibilities. With over 3000 acres of ranch property bordering the million acre Rio Grande National Forest, you’ll always have new trails to discover and new mountains to climb.
Because mountain weather conditions can change quickly you’ll want to layer your clothing and be prepared while out on the trail. We suggest you bring a light day pack, hiking sticks, a fleece, non-cotton shirts or t-shirts that wick away moisture, refillable water bottle, comfortable hiking boots and good socks, brimmed hat or cap with keepers, sunglasses, sunscreen, and mosquito repellant.
The Natural Hot Springs:
The natural hot springs at the 4UR Ranch are located in an indoor pool at our Little Medicine Spa adjacent to our outdoor geothermal heated swimming pool. Clothing is required in both pools so bring your swim suits, sun hats, and sunscreen.
Yoga:
Our resident yoga instructor, Chere Waters, offers a twice weekly morning yoga class at the pool and we suggest you pack your loose comfortable yoga wear, refillable water bottle, and a light fleece.
Fitness:
If you want to vacation but don’t want to give up your daily workout, the ranch has a small fitness room at the Little Medicine Spa area equipped with a treadmill, stationary bike, elliptical, tower, bench, free weights, TRX, and mats. If you choose to bring a personal device for music, please bring earbuds or headphones. Out of respect for other guests and to enjoy the quiet of the mountains, we don’t allow portable speakers, speaker phones, and music amplification in public areas.
Mountain Biking:
If you’re a serious mountain biker you’ll want to bring your bike,
helmet, water bottle, and appropriate biking apparel including fleece and gloves for cool morning rides.
Dining Attire:
The 4UR is a “ranch” vacation and as such we don’t have a dress code and we’re pretty casual during the day. However, many of our returning guests like to dress up a little for fine dining in the lodge and Monday night Cocktail Party. So when asked we say dining attire is “dressy casual”.
Please call the ranch if you have any questions or concerns before your arrival at 719-658-2202. We look forward to welcoming you!
